Clár funding to benefit families in Kerry- Griffin

Fine Gael TD for Kerry has highlighted a new round of Clár funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development, saying that Kerry County Council should apply now to support families in Kerry.

My colleague the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, has announced €5 million for Clár this year, which is really welcome news for families in communities across Kerry.

“Clár provides funding for small scale capital projects in rural areas that have experienced significant levels of depopulation. We want to support people in depopulated areas to stay and raise their families there, which will serve to strengthen communities across rural Ireland.

“Kerry County Council has now been notified of this year’s Clár funding, so I urge them to make their applications in good time. They can apply for a maximum of 15 projects and can do so either directly, or by facilitating local groups to apply.”

Clár is part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development. Funding will be provided under three measures: Support for Schools/Community Safety Measures; Play Areas; and First Response Support Measure.

Minister Griffin continued: “The funding will be used for to support investments such as play areas for children; traffic calming measures around schools; and support for emergency responders.

“The Clár programme is also helping to make rural schools safer for our children by funding footpaths outside schools and supporting traffic calming measures to get cars to slow down as they pass schools.

“The Clár programme also supports our voluntary first-response organisations who provide an excellent and vital service across Kerry. Having local access to defibrillators is hugely important for people here, and last year, 158 of these devices were distributed nationally under the Clár Programme. Through Clár, we also allocated funding for twelve emergency response vehicles for voluntary organisations.”

Minister Michael Ring said: “One of the strategic objectives of the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 strategy is to strengthen rural economies and communities. The CLÁR programme is helping to improve the quality of life in rural communities and is an important part of the Government’s integrated strategy for rural development which will be supported through the new Rural Regeneration and Development Fund. This fund will provide an additional €1 billion to be invested directly into rural communities by my Department up to 2027.”
