Statement by Brendan Griffin TD

KERRY Fine Gael TD, Brendan Griffin, brought the Minister for the OPW, Sean Canney, on a tour of The Maharees on Friday morning to show him the scale of the coastal erosion issues affecting the area. Deputy Griffin said that he felt it was important for the Minister to see the area in person.
“The Minister got to see the scale of the problems facing The Maharees first-hand. As part of the approach to tackling the problems facing the area, I proposed to him the establishment of a Maharees Working Group, comprising of OPW, NPWS, Kerry County Council, Local Community and Oireachtas representation.
“Part of the problem here, and in many other locations, has been the lack of an organised, regular and co-ordinated approach between the agencies of the State and constructive liaison with local residents. I think this would be helpful to keep this important matter on the agenda and secure progress on the many tasks that require action.”
Deputy Griffin commended the efforts of the local community to date in dealing with the coastal erosion issue and vowed to continue to do his best to ensure that the great local efforts are met with equal efforts by the State.
Deputy Griffin has now contacted the NPWS and Kerry County Council with a view to getting the working group established.
