Designation to Support and Create Local Jobs
Statement by Brendan Griffin TD (FG) Kerry

KERRY Fine Gael TD, Brendan Griffin, has received confirmation from the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, that Renard Pier in South Kerry is to be designated for commercial fish landings.
Deputy Griffin has been working on the repair and upgrade of Renard Pier over a number of years and is warmly welcoming the agreement in principle by Minister Coveney to designate the pier, pending the completion of safety works and subsequent assessment.
Deputy Griffin says that the designation of Renard Pier for commercial landings is a major boost to the local economy and will support and create additional jobs in the growing local fish processing industry.
“Renard Pier was left to crumble into the sea by previous governments. In recent years, I have lobbied hard for funding to get the pier repaired and brought up to a workable standard.
“Most of this work is now completed and following many months of working with me on the specific designation issue, I am glad that the Minister is now in agreement that the pier will be designated for commercial landings, which will be a big boost to local industry.
“I thank Minister Coveney for his work on this important matter and for listening to the concerns and needs of local industry. I look forward to the designation being officially signed off on once the remaining works and safety assessment are cleared.
“This will help create and sustain badly needed local jobs in Renard, Cahersiveen and the general South Kerry area and I am glad that this important piece of infrastructure, which had been laying waste, is now to be put to good use with positive economic benefits for the area.”
