Funding boost for 9 Schools in Kerry to carry out vital electrical upgrades – Griffin

Wednesday, April 27th 2016.

KERRY Fine Gael TD, Brendan Griffin, has been informed that 9 Kerry schools are to benefit from funding to improve electrical works.

The schools to benefit are:

Glounaguillagh NS, Caragh Lake;

Ballyfinnane NS;

Holy Family NS, Balloonagh;

Presentation Primary School, Listowel;

Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Castleisland;

St. Finian’s NS, Waterville;

Presentation Secondary School, Listowel;

Coláiste Na Sceilge, Cahersiveen and

Causeway Comprehensive School.

Funding of €30 million will see major improvements in 197 primary and post primary schools around the country under the Summer Works Scheme for 2016 and 2017

The majority of works in schools in Kerry will be carried out in schools over the summer months, to minimise disruption to students, teachers and other school staff. Since the formation of the new Dáil, Deputy Griffin has been calling for the successful applicants under the scheme to be announced in advance of the formation of a new government to allow schools time to prepare for the works. He discussed the matter with the outgoing Minister for Education and the Taoiseach to fast track the scheme, which was originally to be left to the new Minister.

Deputy Griffin said:

“There’s great work being done in schools across Kerry and this funding will help Boards of Management and school principals to carry out priority electrical projects.

“This Summer Works Scheme is also welcome news for the local economy in Kerry as it will support jobs in construction. I look forward to further funding for schools being announced in different categories of works in the future.”
