Important Aid for Kerry Airport to Continue Beyond 2014
OPEX & CAPEX worth €1.136m to Kerry Airport in 2013
Statement by Brendan Griffin TD (FG) KERRY
Tuesday, 17 December 2013
It has been confirmed to Kerry Fine Gael TD, Brendan Griffin, that the Government has today (Tuesday) made the decision to continue exchequer support for the four regional airports (Ireland West Knock Airport, Waterford Airport, Kerry Airport and Donegal Airport) beyond 2014.
Previously, exchequer support for regional airports through the OPEX and CAPEX schemes was due to cease by end of 2014. However, it will now be extended to allow the regional airports to develop and implement new business plans that will ensure they continue to serve the regions.
The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport will now develop the new funding arrangements in consultation with the European Commission.
Deputy Griffin says that the decision makes sense and gives peripheral counties like Kerry a better chance to develop key industries and jobs.
“Kerry Airport was granted €436k under the OPEX scheme for 2013 and almost €700k under the CAPEX scheme and I am glad that such schemes will now continue beyond 2014. When the PSO subsidy is also considered, it is clear that this Government sees Kerry Airport as an important access point for the region and I will continue to work to ensure that this prioritisation continues into the future.”
